Georges Bizet’s Carmen is one of the longest-running and best-loved operas in history, having graced theaters and charmed audiences for well over a century. Opera America has ranked it fourth in its list of the world’s 20 most-performed operas. It has also become symbolic of the opéra-comique, a genre that combines song and spoken dialogue.

The Carmen libretto was written by Ludovic Halevy and Henri Meilhac, inspired by a novella by Prosper Mérimée. The story takes place in Seville, Spain in the 1830s, and tells the story of Carmen, a beautiful gyspy who enchants a promising young officer named Don Jose. Carmen seduces him in order to free her fellow gypsies, who have been caught bringing contraband across the border, but little did she know that she would a fiery infatuation in the naïve soldier, leading him to throw his career aside in pursuit of her.

Don Jose becomes a sought-after fugitive after saving Carmen from arrest, killing a fellow officer in the process. But Carmen, fickle and playful, does not take well to his possessiveness. She casually ditches him and runs off with Escamillo, a Sevillan toreador. The story reaches a tragic climax as Don Jose follows the two to the bullring, confronts Carmen, and fatally stabs her in his frustration.

Carmen premiered on March 3, 1975 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The initial reception was cold, as the conservative French deemed the story immoral and inappropriate. Its second production at Vienna’s Hofoper (now the Vienna State Opera) was much better received, leading to subsequent productions in Brussels, Antwerp, and Budapest in 1876. Carmen later made it to stages in Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Dublin, London, Philadelphia, and New York, and eventually Australia, Italy and Spain.

Unfortunately, Bizet did not live long enough to see his work become a success. He died on June 3, 1875, just three months after Carmen opened in Paris. Not long after, the play won the hearts of leading European composers, including Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

The original cast included Célestine Galli-Marié as Carmen, Paul Lhérie as Don Jose, amd Jacques Bouhy as Escamillo. The role of Carmen was originally written for a mezzo-soprano, but newer versions have been written for sopranos as well. The rest of the roles have been largely unchanged from 1875.

Many recognize Carmen today as much for its captivating story as for the songs it has brought to the stage. Among the favorites are the “Habanera,” the “Toréador Song,” and the “Flower Song.”

Carmen is currently on tour and has so far opened in Albuquerque, Pittsburgh, West Palm Beach, Wichita, El Paso, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and New York. It has also toured internationally, stopping in London, Vienna, Verona, Bologna, and Barcelona. Nadia Krasteva and Kate Aldrich share the role of Carmen in the current tour, both having made a name for themselves around Europe. Brandon Jovanovich and Yonghoon Lee both play Don Jose. Other cast members include Elaine Alvarez, Nicole Cabell, Kyle Ketelsen, Paulo Szot, and Marius Kwiecien.
